Chapter Fourteen

“Damn, he’s good.” Speaker told Steele, “I didn’t see that. Did you?”

“Play it again,” Jason requested, “the frames of the man carrying Grif.” He dug around in his pocket for his phone, “freeze it when you have a shot of him facing this way.”

Kalon did as he asked and glanced at Jason who was flicking through the images on his phone. The image stopped on the screen, Jason handed his phone over… showing Kalon an image, “can we hook this up and see if that guy’s build matches this one?”

“Who’s that?” Jonah leaned in over Jason’s shoulder trying to get a look at the image.

“Someone who was at Grif’s the last time I was there.” Jason scrubbed a hand over the back of his neck and he did his best to avoid looking at Jonah.

“He’s hiding something,” Malik whispered in Zeke’s ear, “three, two, one.”

Almost to the split-second Malik had finished his countdown, Micah swatted Jason on the ass, “what are you hiding?”

“Is it wrong that I want to sing-song ‘someone’s in trouble’ at that?” Zeke asked drawing a burst of laughter from Malik.

“He enjoys getting in trouble a little too much,” Fritz deadpanned from beside them, making Malik choke on the sip of water he had just taken.

“Jeez Boss, a little warning.”

“Jase?”

“I don’t know his name Jonah,” Jason shrugged, “he just pinged on my radar, so I took a photo, but as you can see he is pretty good at keeping his face obscured.”

“Can I put it on the screen?” Kalon asked.

“If it’s a match sure, if not then there is no need to.”

Kalon nodded and got to work resizing the stilled imaged he had taken from the video to superimpose it over the image from Jason’s phone. “It’s a close match,” he said after a couple of minutes. He looked at Jason who sighed but nodded for him to go ahead.

Three images flashed up on the screen, the single photos side by side and one with the first image covering the second. “It’s as close as I can get it as he is in slightly different stances.”

“Who is he Jason?” Matt asked.

“As I told Jonah, I don’t know him,” Jason told them, “but I can tell you that both Grif and Shar know him.” He took a breath and blew it out slowly, “know him very well, and based on what I saw they have known each other a long time as they were really comfortable together.”

“How do you mean Jase?” Micah asked.

“You know how it is when you meet someone you don’t know well, there are slight hesitancies, like asking someone how they take their coffee or which beer they prefer to drink? Jason asked.

Oh shit, Malik could see where this was going…back when he had been a member of Team Panther, and Grif and Shar had been together, he had walked in on a scenario involving a third. At the time he had just shrugged it off as none of his business. Now he had to wonder if they had made that a more permanent arrangement.
